Gender Therapy in Michigan

Hi, my name is Amalia Miralrío (she/her), and I’m a gender therapist in Detroit, Michigan.

You may be feeling the impacts of gender based violence, working through your own nuanced gender identity, or exhausted by misogyny. I understand, and I’m here to help.

I help people affirm their own experiences and identities of gender and heal from gender-based trauma.

If you’re ready to start feeling better, schedule a complimentary consultation with me today.

My approach to Gender Therapy

I work with clients who are women and I work with clients who are non-binary. You might not fall neatly into either one of those categories, and that’s okay. I use these terms as quick shorthand for the many diverse gender identities that are often categorized under these two umbrella terms.

Most, if not all, of my clients have experienced some type of gender-based violence or trauma. Many of my clients have experienced sexual violence. We know that sexual assault impacts women, trans, and gender non-binary individuals at higher rates than cis-men

You deserve to be heard and believed.  Part of being a trauma-informed practitioner working with issues of gender is to have an understanding of how societal and cultural understandings of gender impact individuals.

Your gendered experience can cause pain that shows up in other ways, too.

You may be dealing with harassment, belittlement, or other forms of abuse in the workplace.

You might be navigating a gender identity that people around you don’t understand, or aren’t invested in trying to understand.

You might be feeling at peace with the people in your chosen family today, but have a feeling that your experiences in your childhood and adolescence are still showing up in sneaky ways.  Maybe it still feels like parts of how you were mistreated were your fault, even though every part of you intellectually understands that isn’t true.

You might be feeling the pressures of unrealistic beauty standards. You know that paying for lip filler and botox isn’t going to help you love yourself more, but the persuasive marketing has you wondering. I’m certainly not here to tell you what to do or not do to your body and face — but to help you uncover the deeper meaning for yourself.

I enjoy working with clients who think critically about how their gender impacts their lived experience, because I know there is so much more to be said than simple “women empowering women” graphics on Instagram can capture.

I’m not here to tell you to love yourself and to convince you to move on past your gender-based trauma and pain.

I am here to help you make rich, nuanced, meaning that feels like you — not that feels like me. I’m here to help you embrace your gendered identity in the ways that you need to.

 How Gender Therapy Works

The first step is to schedule a free consultation where we can meet via video and talk about what’s bringing you into therapy at this point in your life.

During our first three sessions, I’ll ask you to share as much as you can about your life. We can begin wherever you like, and I’ll ask follow up questions.

After we’ve met a few times, I’ll be able to share some initial themes I’m hearing and make a recommendation of what I think could best help you.

We will pick consistent times to meet and I will continue supporting your journey, encouraging honest processing, and highlighting themes I’m hearing.

Gender Therapist FAQs

+ Why do you specialize in working with women and gender non-binary individuals?

Early in my career, I recognized that the women and non-binary clients I was working with were almost universally bringing up content connected to their gendered lives. The ways that others were expecting them to perform their gender, their own thoughts about this part of themselves, and gender-based violence and abuse. I quickly realized that we can’t separate personal psychology from the larger societal and cultural structures of power. In terms of my personal subjectivity, I am a woman and I also think critically about how my own gender impacts my relationships, self-perception, and professional life.

+ Do you work with trans women?

A thousand times, yes! I know that this has to be explicitly stated — but of course. In every place on my website or social media presence that you see me mention “women,” please know that I am always including trans women in my definition of women.

+ Do you provide letters to help clients access gender-affirming medical care?

Absolutely. I am more than happy to provide the necessary documentation to help my clients access gender-affirming medical care. I do not charge extra fees to provide these letters to existing clients. You should not have to justify your healthcare needs to anyone.

+ What kind of training do you have to be a gender therapist?

Academically and professionally speaking, I have an undergraduate degree in Women’s Studies and a graduate degree in Human Sexuality. I have years of experience working in sex education, sexual violence prevention, and sexual violence advocacy. Therapeutically, I have a strong background in supporting survivors of sexual trauma. I have years of experience listening for ways that gender shows up in my clients’ content and pain points.
